The fifth generation of the Ford Ranger pickup truck is now also being made in China. The model has just launched in one of the world's biggest car markets, with prices starting at 160,000 yuan, which translates to $22,000.
The latest-get Ford Ranger, underpinned by the T6 platform, made its debut in November 2021. Now, it arrives in China as a locally built product. The Ford Ranger for China is the first global product that FoMoCo produces locally, based on the carmaker’s truck joint venture with partner Jiangling Motors Group Go.

Jiangling Ford Auto has recently updated its position on the Chinese market and re-steered focus towards pickup trucks and off-road SUVs. And the Ford Ranger is obviously privileged, considering the shift in preferences.

All Ford-badged SUVs and pickup trucks will roll out in China under the Ford Beyond brand.

For a start, the mid-size pickup truck is going to be available as a limited-run 1st Edition. Only 800 such units will hit the market, with prices starting at 269,800 yuan, the equivalent of approximately $37,155. But the base version starts way below, at 160,000 yuan, which is little over $22,000, That is a price tag that places the Ford Ranger in the low-budget pickup truck segment, where locally built models are.

Ford has not pointed out the special equipment that the first edition is getting, but the company is already accepting pre-orders for it.

What we do know is that the engine lineup of the Ranger in China comprises a 2.3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine and a turbocharged 2.3-liter diesel unit. The 3.0-liter V6 engine is not available in the Asian state, at least not for the moment. Six-speed manual and automatic are present in the lineup, with the ten-speed auto box also available.

The model built in China has recently been on display at the Chengdu Auto Show. That is where the Explorer also arrived in the shape of a Red Gold Edition. While the model is about to be ditched from the American lineup, it still is in full swing in China.

Priced at 399,800 yuan (around $55,060), the special version gets a grey paintwork with a contrasting radiator grille in gold. The new Bronco was in Chengdu as well, but the off-roader will not be made in China just yet but will be sold as an imported product. Also exhibited at the auto show was a Firestorm Special Edition of the Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck.

The Ford Ranger should enter production in China this fall, with first deliveries expected to take place in the first quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, new Rangers that will be sold in the United States are already driving through the gates of the Michigan Assembly Plant. American dealerships should get the models this fall.

Ford is also building the Edge L in China. But that is a China-only model and so is the Equator.
