Traveling and exploring the world in a camper van is no longer seen as a popular pastime just for millennials. The promise of freedom and endless adventures appeals to people of all ages and from all walks of life.
They say that once you have traveled in a camper van, you're converted for life. And with so many beautiful and well-appointed builds out there and so many places to explore, we can see why. Take, for instance, this 2017 Mercedes Sprinter MWB van that has been converted into a charming home on wheels ready to hit the open road. It's one of those micro-homes on wheels that make you swoon and reconsider simple living.

Built by Byron Bay Van Fitouts in Australia, this micro camper is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts seeking freedom and flexibility to travel along the country's stunning coastline, swapping the dreary cityscape for serene beaches and rugged backcountry landscapes. It perfectly blends the convenience of a tiny home with daily adventures in a way that is both economical and comfortable.

Byron Bay Van Fitouts is a young company started in 2021 by Matty and Gina, two lovers of life on the road. After buying a 35-year-old yellow Ford Spectron and converting it into their mobile home, the couple ended up turning their passion into a business, and now they are helping other people realize their dream of exploring the world in bespoke campers that reflect their personality and style. The team has built around 40 custom campers so far, including vans, buses, an Airstream, caravans, and 4WD vehicles.

The build we're looking at today is a camper conversion based on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter MWB cargo van. Medium wheel base vans are a great platform for a mobile living space as they offer much more flexibility than LWB models. They are easy to drive, maneuver, and live with, and you can park them in normal car-sized spaces.

However, the available square footage inside is reduced, so you do have to sacrifice in some areas. With a thoughtful layout, ingenious storage solutions, and clever organization hacks, the team at Byron Bay Van Fitouts managed to create a comfortable and functional living space that makes you forget about this compromise.

Boasting an unassuming all-white exterior, this is an inconspicuous camper that allows you to stealth camp and seamlessly blend in urban environments. Once you open the sliding side door, you'll find a homey, inviting interior that exudes Bohemian vibes and integrates some clever features.

The first thing that caught our attention was the unusual layout, which has the kitchen uniquely placed in front of the cab, a lounge/dining area in the middle of the van, and a fixed bed at the rear.

The outfitters used a neutral color palette for the interior with white pine walls and lightweight white melamine cabinetry to keep it open and bright, harmoniously complemented by camphor wood ceilings and bench tops that add warmth to the space. We can also spot camphor window frames and blackbutt flooring, which is highly scratch-resistant and waterproof. The earthy orange cushions and bedding set add a much-needed pop of color and energy, turning the interior into a vibrant and lively space.

The kitchen block at the front integrates plenty of storage for pots and pans, plus the necessary appliances for cooking on the road, including a custom gas box, a Thetford gas two-burner cooktop, an under-counter fridge, and a undermount white stone sink. A beautiful touch is the arched opening in the wall separating the cab from the living area, which offers those in the front unhindered visibility to the living quarters.

This camper van comes with dual sliding doors, so you have access inside from both sides. This configuration also results in maximum luminosity inside, helps with ventilation, and creates a seamless inside/outside flow. And since vanlife is all about enjoying the outdoors and creating a more profound connection with the surroundings, a layout that blurs the line between the inside and the outside is what many people are looking for.

The lounge/dining area comprises two built-in benches on either side of the van with custom leather cushions and a pull-out table in between that remains hidden under the bed when not in use. Two large drawers under the bed offer some storage space for personal belongings.

The fixed bed occupies the rear of the van and can comfortably accommodate two people. Recessed windows in the bedroom area add some extra room so I can stretch out in bed. The Mercedes van has tinted windows throughout for privacy, and a climb-through hatch above the bed offers access to a custom rooftop deck where campers can enjoy stunning panoramic views.

Another highlight of this van conversion is the ingenious outdoor seating area that is integrated under the bed. It comprises a table and two benches that neatly slide out of the back of the van and allow campers to dine outdoors or simply relax and take in the views.

Other features meant to enhance comfort include a Fogatti gas heater, an 80-liter internal water tank, an internal Sirocco fan, a Maxx fan above the cooker, 170-Watt of solar power, and a 200Ah lithium battery, and an outdoor instant hot water shower.

This beautifully converted Mercedes Sprinter camper van is currently for sale in Australia for AUD $99,850, which is approx. USD $65,122. With its open layout and custom rooftop deck, this micro-camper can offer stunning nature views and experiences that rival those of million-dollar homes.
