If you thought that all Americans want are trucks, trucks, trucks, well, yes, you were right. The Ford F-150 remained the most popular used car sold in the US in 2023. But which was the most popular EV?
ISeeCars analyzed over 9.2 million used car sales from the last five years and calculated each model’s market share of used car sales nationally, but also within metropolitan areas and within states.

It is easy to guess what the Americans would go for on the used car market because it happens the same every year. It was the Ford F-150, which accounted for 3.3 percent of the sales in 2023. Following the predictability trend, the Chevrolet Silverado came in second with 2.6 percent of the used car market, followed by the Chevrolet Equinox SUV and, in number four, another pickup truck: the Ram 1500, which was third in 2022.

But there were American buyers who went for something different. The used electric car market has been growing. With better battery tech and upgraded range, EVs are not as scary as they were years ago for those who intend to buy a second-hand car. Furthermore, some surprising shifts in popularity happened in the segment.

The Tesla Model 3 kept its ground despite the imminent arrival of the facelifted version. There was, though, a drop in market share, from 40 percent in 2022 to 34.9 in 2023.

Most likely, these are customers who will stay away from the Highland that reportedly entered production at the Fremont factory, following the ramped-up production at Giga Texas in Shanghai, China.

The next in line is, just like last year, the Model Y. The crossover is also bound to get an upgraded version. Prototypes have been caught testing on public roads, but knowing Elon Musk, setting a deadline for the arrival of the facelift would be a very imprudent move.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is the most affordable EV in the United States as new, starting at $26,500. But the used car market, of which it accounted for 6.9 percent, brings two- or three-year-old electric Bolt examples for as much as $16,000.

In 2023, the Tesla Model S had to settle for a position way down the ranking. It finished third in 2022, but sat in the fifth position in 2023 with a 5.6 percent market share, followed by the Model X crossover with 5.5 percent.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E made it to the Top 10 again, keeping the seventh place just like last year, with 4.6.

According to ISeeCars, Three German models round up the Top 10: the Audi e-tron with 2.9 percent, the Porsche Taycan with 2.4, and the Volkswagen ID.4 with 2.2. There is, though, no EV in the Top 20 most popular used cars in the United States in 2023.
