It's that time of the year when Ford reminds everyone that America's favorite pickup truck is the F-Series. While technically correct, the devil is in the details.
Including the F-150 Lighting and Super Duty line of heavy-duty trucks, the F-Series clocked 750,789 deliveries in the United States last year. Combining the Chevrolet Silverado and technically similar GMC Sierra results in 850,885 deliveries for General Motors, which still hasn't started production of the Sierra EV. The Silverado EV is also nowhere to be seen, with GM reporting a meager 461 sales compared to 24,165 for the Ford F-150 Lightning.

While on the subject of electric trucks, the off-road-oriented GMC Hummer EV is listed with 3,244 sales for both the pickup truck and sport utility vehicle. Unfortunately, General Motors didn't bother separating the full-size pickup's deliveries from those of the sport utility vehicle-bodied sibling. The same applies to Rivian, which bested expectations with 50,122 global deliveries for the R1T and R1S in 2023. Most of them ended up in the United States.

Turning our attention back to the Ford Motor Company, it should be noted that Dearborn's favorite son is king of the hill in terms of hybrid trucks. The F-150 PowerBoost is the segment's favorite (50,103 deliveries compared to 30,303 for the Toyota Tundra i-FORCE MAX), and the Maverick Hybrid is unchallenged in the compact segment (52,361 deliveries compared to 41,697 for the 2.0-liter turbo).

Rather than the GMC Sierra, the third best-selling truck in the full-size segment is the Ram P/U series, with P/U standing for both the current-gen DT and old-gen DS that's advertised as the Ram 1500 Classic. All told, Stellantis recorded 444,926 sales in the United States market. The Sierra ranks fourth with 295,737 units compared to 555,148 for the Silverado, whereas the Toyota Tundra settles for fifth place.

Sales total 125,185 units for both the combustion-only Tundra i-FORCE and hybrid-assisted Tundra i-FORCE MAX. Adding to the confusion, Toyota uses a similar nomenclature for the 2.4-liter turbo four-pot powertrains of the 2024 model year Tacoma. Fellow Japanese automaker Nissan is dead last in the ranking, with the Titan recoding 19,189 deliveries.

That's 1,599.083 trucks per month on average, which is a shockingly bad result for a full-size truck in full-size truck country. Even more shocking, the Titan improved 27.4 percent over 2022 in terms of sales. Be that as it may, Nissan's big-boy truck will be discontinued from the lineup after the 2024 model year, leaving the Frontier to soldier on alone. Nissan is currently exploring at least one zero-emission truck for the United States market, namely a Frontier-sized electric truck that could launch by decade's end.

With Tesla kicking off Cybertruck deliveries at Gigafactory Texas on November 30, there's no denying that Cybertruck deliveries are worse still. On the other hand, Tesla Technoking Elon Musk expects Tesla to reach a yearly output of 250,000 trucks sometime in 2025. The Cybertruck racked up 1.9 million reservations in July 2023, but only time will tell whether those reservations will morph into firm orders that Tesla will deliver in a timely fashion.

That said, care to guess which is the most affordable new full-size pickup on sale in the US today? The answer is Ram 1500 Classic at $32,345 before taxes and extras. The DT generation is $40,275 for the 2025 model year, whereas the F-150 and Silverado are available to configure at $36,570 and $36,800.
