iOS 14 will be a massive update for all iPhone owners, and in addition to new features like widgets on the home screen and a sound recognition system, it will also bring lots of goodies to CarPlay users.
For example, CarPlay will finally get support for wallpapers in the next iPhone software update, something that was previously possible only on jailbroken devices.
But now Apple is making the whole thing happen on all iPhones, and the best of all is that it does this alongside a series of other improvements too.
One of them is a new privacy indicator that shows up on the CarPlay UI whenever certain features of the iPhone are accessed.
As you probably know already, Apple has become a privacy-obsessed company, so every iOS software update includes additional controls to show users how their data is being used. iOS 14, for example, will include a warning when apps access clipboard data, something that has already revealed a pretty odd behavior implemented by so many high-profile apps.
But in addition to these, CarPlay will also indicate whenever apps access the microphone or the iPhone camera right in its main UI.
How it does this is with small colored dots that show up right under the clock. As you can see in this screenshot, the green dot is displayed whenever an app uses the camera – if you’re wondering who uses the camera while driving, just think of an iPhone that’s being used as a dash cam.
In addition, an orange dot shows up under the clock when the microphone is enabled, such as when providing hands-free instructions to an app. Needless to say, these are both small tweaks that so many people could actually miss, especially because CarPlay doesn’t seem to tell us what these do in a more straightforward and clear manner.
