The Mazda CX-5 is one of this year’s most complete compact SUVs. It combines a fluid premium design with great handling and offers loads of useful features, all available at an affordable price. We look at some of the most useful safety features found on the model.
The car that won the “2020 Top Safety Pick+” award given by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) features many standard safety features like front, side and overhead airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and 4-wheel ABS. It also includes other important advanced safety features.

Brake Assist

In some instances where drivers press the brake pedal as hard as they can, it may not be enough. Brake Assist checks the braking pressure and the speed at which the brake pedal is pressed. If it decides that the force is insufficient, the system compensates by applying more brake pressure.

Electronic Stability Control

The CX-5 uses the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC), which automatically takes control of the vehicle when skidding is detected.

It efficiently controls engine power and the braking force applied to each wheel through 4-wheel antilock braking system and the Traction Control System (TCS).

This helps the vehicle keep traction when cornering on slippery roads or when steering suddenly to avoid a collision.

Blind Spot Monitor

This feature uses radars mounted in the rear bumper to detect vehicles approaching from behind and in the close-by lane.

It warns drivers about the presence of vehicles in the blind spot on either side by flashing an icon in the respective door mirror. If the driver tries to change lanes with a vehicle in the blind spot, the icon flashes and a warning sound goes off.

Lane Departure Warning

The system detects line markings on the road surface and notifies the driver of unintentional lane departures. It is particularly effective in situations where the road is continuously straight, and drivers get distracted and stop paying enough attention to the road.

When the lane change is accompanied by turn signal usage or acceleration, the system recognizes the maneuver as intentional and stays silent.

Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection

The Advanced SCBS is active between speeds around 2 to 50 mph (4 to 80 kph) and alerts the driver of a possible collision when the camera placed in the rear-view mirror detects a vehicle or a person ahead and decides that a collision is unavoidable.

In addition, the system reduces damage in case of a collision by using the brake control when it decides that a collision is unavoidable, and the driver depresses the brake pedal.

High Beam Control

This system detects oncoming and preceding vehicles and automatically switches between high and low beams during night driving, making it easier for the driver to spot hazards.

Vehicles usually drive with the headlights on high beam at night so the system switches from high beam to low beam only when it detects the taillights o or headlights of oncoming cars.

It also switches the headlights to low beam when the vehicle is driving in brightly lit areas or at speeds lower than 17 mph (30 kph), when high beams are not needed.

The second generation CX-5 builds on what was already an exceptionally good car. It is a premium SUV with many excellent features, it handles exceptionally well and more important, has many award-wining advanced safety features. It is also available at an attractive price; the base model can be yours for $28,000.
