Ditching the comforts, the space, and the financial burden of a brick-and-mortar home, whether a city apartment or a house in the suburbs, for a tiny house is not just for young childless families or empty-nesters. The Harmony tiny is here to prove that.
The tiny living phenomenon has been around for over two decades. Tiny houses started as a niche product designed for eco-warriors looking to reduce their carbon footprint and their monthly expenses along with it. In recent years, tiny living has been gaining popularity – and attention – for the promise of more freedom to travel around the country and live untethered and unburdened and for offering more affordable housing solutions amid a looming financial and housing crisis.

Despite the surge in popularity, which has given way to a wider range of models and variations, tiny houses are still considered viable options for young childless families and empty nesters. Tiny living is great as long as you do it in twos, with the occasional guest sleeping over – at least, that's the most frequent misconception about tinies.

A unit like Harmony turns that preconception on its head. Harmony is one of the handful of models offered by Hungary-based builder Valeur Home, also available through Belgium-based company Hasta La Vista Homes. Its name really says it all: it's a family home that aims to promote harmony through sustainability, circularity, comfort, and gorgeous styling. It is, in short, the kind of tiny that could (probably, hopefully) get a skeptic to give tiny living some serious thought.

Harmony sits on a triple-axle trailer and is 7.2 meters (23.6 feet) long and 4 meters (13.1 feet) high. It offers sleeping for as many as six people, four of them on a permanent basis thanks to the two lofts, one on either end. If space is something you simply can't do without, then Harmony is perfect for two people, with the smaller loft serving as storage space and the guest room doubling as a living room slash lounge.

Harmony is styled in darker tones, with plenty of whites and neutrals to offset the otherwise somber tone. The combination gives it a very homey, cozy, and quite elegant vibe, which puts it on par with a typical home. This is not the kind of tiny where you'll be seeing many DIY (do it yourself) or art projects: Harmony wants to be a reliable family home, and it starts doing so by looking the part.

"The Harmony brings balance to the family," reads the official description from Hasta La Vista Homes, which counts this model as its most popular from its entire lineup. The Harmony was also present at Batibouw 2023 in March, in the Flex Living Zone, as is used by manager Cathy Camertijn as an example of why tiny house regulations must change in the EU to allow more people to try it out.

Legislation issues aside (which are present in most countries and represent the biggest hurdle potential tiny house owners have to overcome), Harmony comes on a detachable trailer, which means you can remove it and turn it into a more permanent fixture on a piece of land, and then use the trailer for other stuff. It's delivered fully furnished or as a custom turnkey, according to your budget and whatever you have in mind for your future forever home.

Even as a standard model, Harmony is a gorgeous (if tiny) home. Access is done through double French doors that allow you to expand available space into the outside by adding a deck. The ground floor holds the living room, the kitchen, and the bathroom, which is compact but full-size in terms of features, with a composting toilet, standing shower, and toilet with vanity.

On each end of the trailer is a loft, with the larger one accessible by means of storage-integrating stairs and the smaller one by means of a removable ladder. The former set of stairs serves as wardrobe and pantry, so one side is facing the kitchen, which is single-block but offers everything you need for large cooking parties.

At first sight, it doesn't look like the design includes a dining area, but that's because it's hidden from view in the living room. There's a folding table right by the window, a two-fold piece of furniture that allows you to have it out of sight (and out of mind) when you're not using it.

The interior is finished in dark brown wood over white walls with black trim on the windows and the door. On paper, the combination is a bit too dramatic for a family home, but pictures in the gallery show that it creates a very elegant space that doesn't lack coziness – or, for that matter, family-friendliness.

The one thing neither company says about Harmony is in regard to pricing. Hasta La Vista Homes does note repeatedly that they're aiming for affordability along with sustainability, circularity, and creating a tiny community. If you know anything about tinies, you must know that "affordable" is a highly relative concept. We reached out to Valeur Homes for a starting price and more details, and we'll update the story when and if we hear back.
