We are used to Tesla drivers doing things out of the ordinary. Climbing on power boxes at McDonald's or ending up in some ditch because the Autopilot kept driving are two of the many. But this one is probably the craziest thing you'll see today. A Tesla Model Y tows a massive semi trailer.
Everything was caught on video. The EV was filmed towing the 53-foot trailer around the town. The driver eventually ditched it near a gas station that came his way. But there is this bizarre story developing around the Tesla and keeps snowballing.

The white Tesla. together with the semi trailer, was first spotted near a Bass Pro Shop in Harlingen, Texas. Other videos surfaced online. The assembly is seen driving at low speed and the Tesla has its hazard lights on as if it is warning other traffic participants of its presence.

The driver eventually abandoned them both near a gas station, where the Texas Department of Public Safety called a towing company to take them away. Both of them were impounded on Wednesday night after the stunt on public roads. Now, the two of them will surely not return to the streets any time soon.

The video snapped later on shows a towing improvisation. The Model Y does come with an optional towing package and it looks like that might indeed be it. However, the trailer featured a towing kit, which was not compatible with the one of the Tesla. So, whoever did the connections had to improvise.

The Tesla Model Y has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds (1,588 kilograms), while this semi trailer, which was reportedly not loaded at the time, is probably around three times heavier.

The Tesla Cybertruck, with a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds, so it would have been a much more appropriate model to do the job, if really necessary. But considering that the driver abandoned both car and trailer, it probably was not necessary.

Furthermore, the Tesla Model Y is 187 inches (4,75 meters) long, 83.8 inches (2,12 meters) wide, and 63.9 inches (1,62 meters) tall, sporting a wheelbase of 113.8 inches (2,89 meters) and a curb weight of 4,475 pounds (2,030 kilograms). No wonder the 53-foot trailer dwarfs the electric crossover.

Luckily, the driver pulled over and walked away before he caused any incident that might have ended up. An investigation is underway.

Not the first Tesla Model Y to pull such stunts

The one spotted in Texas is not the first Tesla Model Y to pull such towing stunts un public roads. Last week, we reported about another Model Y, also white, that pulled a semi stuck in snow. The Tesla is seen sliding, with the rear end snapping loose while pulling the Renault truck.

And that is not the first Tesla to tow a vehicle that dwarfs it, either. Back in February 2018, the owner of a Model X residing in Norway took to YouTube to show how his electric crossover towed a Volvo truck out of snow.

The Model X sports a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds (2,267 kilograms). The Volvo truck weighs around 95,000 pounds (43,000 kilograms), which is way above what the electric crossover would normally be able to do. So, what are we missing here?
