Tesla's sales are plunging, but it seems that the Cybertruck is keeping the brand afloat. The automaker sold more electric pickup trucks since it started deliveries, on November 30, 2023, than Hummer sold both SUVs and trucks in the entire 2023.
The electric cars' market is shrinking. Demand is plunging and automakers are trying to adapt production to this whole new approach.

Tesla’s first-quarter sales fell by 8.5 percent down to 386,810 vehicles. The carmaker does not disclose the figures by model. But we’ve got NHTSA to get part of that information.

A new recall that highlights a defect of the Cybertruck indicates that 3,878 units need to be fixed. That is how many electric trucks wearing the Tesla badge have been delivered since the handover event, scheduled on November 30, until April 4.

It may not sound like much compared to what Ford did with the F-150 Lightning: 7,743 examples in the first quarter of 2024, which represents an 80.4 percent increase over 2023.

But that one is based on America's best-selling truck, which practically tows it in the ranking, making it a bestseller in its own segment, where it fights Rivian’s R1T or Chevrolet's Silverado EV.

However, the Cybertruck's figures are still above those of the Hummer EV sold during the entire 2023: 3,260 units. And it all started with the ten units delivered on November 30, during the vent held at the Giga Texas.

The Cybertruck is also giving the Rivian R1T a run for its money. Rivian sold 2,399 units in the first three months of 2024.

If Tesla is capable of keeping up its current sales pace, it should deliver around 15,500 pickups this year. However, it remains to be seen if the recall will slow down production. The Giga Texas was actually planning to ramp it up this year, but we have yet to see if Elon Musk can keep that promise.

The Tesla Cybertruck, already hit by two recalls in its five months on the market

We got to find out the sales figures of the Cybertruck from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The authority has just issued a recall for the model that needs to have its accelerator pedal replaced. This is something that will not be solved with an over-the-air update.

Earlier this week, we reported that Tesla stopped deliveries after several owners reported a faulty accelerator pedal. Tesla claims that there weren't any crashes in relation to this issue, but on forums, there are owners who claim that the fault did cause them to crash.

This is the second recall that the Cybertruck has been hit with this year. The first one was back in February and it focused on an issue that had been affecting all Teslas since 2012. The lights indicating the hydraulic and electric brake systems featured the wrong font.
