The Tesla Model Y continued its stellar sales record and officially became Europe's best-selling car overall in 2023. It's the first time an electric vehicle scored such a win and also the first time in modern history that a non-European model finished the year in pole position.
Tesla's electric crossover has scored a significant win in Europe, where it's been officially crowned as the 2023 best-selling car. According to a report from Dataforce compiling data from 97% of sales in the European Union, EFTA, and the UK, the Tesla Model Y has an insurmountable lead over its closest rival. With 254,822 units sold in those markets, Model Y is way ahead of Dacia Sandero (235,893 units), a small hatchback known as one of the most affordable cars in Europe. Volkswagen T-Roc, Renault Clio, and the Peugeot 208 ranked third, fourth, and fifth best-selling cars in Europe last year, based on Dataforce data.

The Model Y was Europe's best-selling vehicle in seven out of 12 months in 2023. Tesla's EV was also projected to become Europe's top seller for December. Despite a 24% dip in sales caused by upgrade works at Giga Shanghai and Giga Berlin, the Tesla Model Y surpassed the Renault Clio with 24,494 to 20,691 units sold in Europe. Dacia Sandero was neck and neck with the Volkswagen Golf for the month's third place, with only 163 units between them, according to preliminary data.

Tesla Model Y's victory is more important than you might think, considering that this is the first time in modern history that an electric vehicle has become the continent's best-selling car. It's also the first midsize car and the first premium car to finish the year as the sales champion. Finally, it's the first non-European car in the modern era to become the continent's bestseller.

Analysts believe the massive price cuts Tesla operated in January 2023 gave the Model Y a significant sales boost. That would be the first time that Tesla's strategy is validated and proof that price cuts do work. Until now, many Wall Street analysts have argued that price cuts revealed Tesla's weakness and only diluted value instead of solving Tesla's problems, which they thought were related to low demand for its EVs.

With Europe already added to its belt, the Model Y is also on track to becoming the world's best-selling vehicle overall. Some analysts already announced such a feat a week ago, with Focus2Move the first to project a Model Y's win after analyzing the January-to-November sales data. According to their ranking, the Model Y sold 1.06 million units through November 2023, dethroning the Toyota Corolla (1.01 million). Elon Musk predicted in 2021 that the Model Y would become the world's top-grossing vehicle in 2022 and lead by the number of units sold in 2023.
