Tesla praises the team in Berlin for what they did in 2023. A video uploaded on social media marks the first full year of production of one of Tesla’s most recent factories The Giga Berlin is the EV maker’s first production center in Europe.
Throughout the video uploaded on former Twitter / current X, employees from various departments of the factory speak about the energy and atmosphere of the place, about being motivated, and about working in an EV factory.

Located some 20 miles (35 kilometers) southeast of Berlin, the facility features a dedicated free train service and various other innovations, such as Tesla’s most advanced shop. It offers two unique paintworks such as the Quicksilver and Midnight Cheery Red for the Model Y crossover. The two shades are the most vivid in Tesla’s current lineup.

The video suggests that the Giga Berlin is ready for more. Right now, the production rate of the plant is of about 5,000 Model Y examples per week. The plan is to roll out 500,000 cars per year, including other models that are yet to be announced by the American carmaker.

This is where the future subcompact Tesla model will be manufactured starting sometime in 2025 to fight the Volkswagen ID.3 and all the super affordable electric models coming all the way from China to conquer the European market.

The Berlin-Brandenburg manufacturing center achieved the milestone one year after the first vehicle rolled off the production line.

To mark the special moment, Tesla also opened its own Christmas market on the grounds of the facility for the employees to “mingle and jingle” among Christmas trees, Christmas lights, and games. And mingle and jingle they did. There are currently 11,500 employees at the Giga Berlin.

Tesla has been considering expansion starting in early 2024, but the move is controversial and it sure won’t be a walk in the park. The expansion concept has been facing backlash from local environmental groups, the same which were furious when they found out about building the plant tare.

Environmentalists accused the EV maker of bringing pollution and destruction to the area, citing potential impacts on water supply and local wildlife, plus proper water disposal.

By February 2020, environmental issues had been cleared through court decisions. Construction of the plant began in May 2020.

In the beginning of March 2022, the government of Brandenburg granted the factory its final environmental approval and it started operations on March 22. The first Model Y saw the light of day at the Gig Berlin by the end of April.

Meanwhile, BYD has made one more step to take on Tesla. The Chinese auto giant announced their first factory in Europe and chose the town of Szeged in Hungary for the facility.
