The refreshed Tesla Model 3 is a very popular topic, surpassing even the Cybertruck. According to new reports from China, the trial production has already started at Giga Shanghai, with an official reveal planned for next month. Mass production should start in September, with deliveries scheduled for 2024.
With the Cybertruck production imminent, many might think it is the most popular Tesla model. Google begs to disagree, and based on the number of searches, the Model 3 and Model Y are by far the most popular Tesla models. The electric sedan surpassed the best-seller in June, as the official launch of the refreshed model is approaching fast. By then, Tesla still needs to calibrate the production line and conclude the final testing of the Project Highland prototypes.

The refreshed Model 3 is shaping up as the most radical redesign in Tesla's history. This is not very difficult, considering how subtle the changes were for the Model S and Model S. Even after repeated updates that culminated earlier this year with the release of the Hardware-4 versions, it's hard to tell a 2023 Model S apart from its earlier versions. This should not be the case with the Tesla Model 3, and we've seen pictures showing a significantly improved design.

The updates are not skin-deep, as Tesla aims to overhaul the Model 3 from manufacturing to technology. Last week, we learned that the Model 3 could feature a steer-by-wire system, which would be unprecedented for a mass-production vehicle. Toyota promised a steer-by-wire system for the Lexus RZ, but it's still years away from production. Besides that, the upcoming Model 3 should have new features such as RGB ambient lighting, ventilated seats, Hardware 4 computer, and an additional front camera for the Tesla Vision system.

As Elon Musk planned his China visit in May, rumors indicated that the refreshed Model 3 would start production on June 1. Tesla's boss would be there to pop the champagne and potentially reveal the new model to the world. Nothing of the sort happened, though, and Musk left just as silent as it arrived in Shanghai. Tesla China even denied the production start rumors, something it had done before even when the rumors proved true.

We have fresh reports claiming that trial production is already underway at Giga Shanghai. This is still a small-batch production, with pre-production vehicles destined mostly for testing. The information has not been confirmed yet, so take this with a grain of salt. Chinese media also claims mass production will start in September, with deliveries planned for 2024. This doesn't sound right, as Tesla aims to start deliveries as soon as mass production begins.

Tesla is undoubtedly pressed to sell the new Model 3 as soon as possible. According to Tesla enthusiast Tsla Chan (@Tslachan), no Model 3 RWD vehicles are available in China's inventory. With the Project Highland rumors coming daily, people are more likely to postpone the purchase until the new model arrives. This could affect Tesla's sales numbers for the rest of the year.
