Following European certification, Tesla officially launched the Model Y Long Range RWD as its longest-range variant, with 600 km (373 miles) of range. The new Model Y trim promises the lowest cost per kilometer in the electric SUV segment, at 14.9 kWh per 100 km (240 Wh per mile).
Tesla recently certified a new variant of the Model Y in Europe, mixing the 79-kWh battery pack of the Long Range variant with a single motor configuration. The new Model Y variant is already on the production line at Giga Berlin, with a delivery window estimated at 2-4 weeks. This is not very different from the other variants of the Model Y (RWD, LR AWD, and Performance), which are listed with a delivery estimate of 2-3 weeks.

Tesla confirmed that the Model Y Long Range RWD is certified for 600 km (373 miles) of range when equipped with the 19-inch Gemini wheels. This is according to the European WLTP standard, which tends to be awfully optimistic. To make an educated comparison, this qualifies as the longest-range variant of the Model Y, with the Long-Range AWD being certified for 533 km (331 miles) of range. The Model Y RWD has a WLTP range of 455 km (282 miles), while the Model Y Performance offers a WLTP range of 514 km (319 miles).

The Model Y LR RWD starts at 48,990 euros in Germany and most European countries, with the highest price (49,970 euros) in Belgium. This translates into $52,467 or $53,517, which is about the price of a Model Y Performance in the United States. For reference, the Model Y LR AWD retails for 54,990 euros in Germany, the equivalent of $58,893. Indeed, life in Europe is expensive, and Germany is not the best place to produce cheap electric vehicles.

Judging by the interest from the Tesla community, the Model Y LR RWD will be a very popular variant, and we should see longer delivery estimates in the coming months. Even when the certification documents were revealed last month, people talked affectionately about the new variant. And it's understandable, considering that the new Model Y version features a large battery pack at a fairly reasonable price.

Tesla has promised a long-range RWD variant since its launch in 2019, although it never delivered it. This variant disappeared from Tesla's website in January 2020 without a single unit being delivered. Even though the LR RWD Model Y is now listed in several European countries, there's no word about a wider availability. The United States is not even mentioned, considering that Tesla will have to produce the new model at Fremont or Giga Texas.

However, with a shortage of 2170 cells in the US, it's highly unlikely that Tesla will bring this variant stateside. Importing the cells from China is also a big no, considering that the Model Y is currently Tesla's only model qualifying for the IRA tax credit. Losing this for one of the Model Y variants would make it a lot harder to sell.
