Tesla is pressing ahead with the Cybertruck production start, and pictures from inside Giga Texas show that things are moving fast. The EV maker has started the pilot line in Austin, with several bodies in white spotted inside the factory. Tesla also confirmed that the first production Cybertruck has been built at Giga Texas, a significant milestone for the company.
Update: Tesla announced that the first production Cybertruck has been built at Giga Texas, marking a significant milestone for the company. The production line is still in testing and calibration before ramping up. Still, it is now complete, as Tesla moved into the release-candidate phase. The pace suggests that Tesla will indeed start production in August as promised, in time for the delivery event at the end of the third quarter.

Earlier this week, we were treated to the picture of two Cybertruck bodies in white on a pallet at Giga Texas. The most exciting part was the first look at the rear megacasting, showing Tesla's progress since a previous leak revealed a makeshift structure typical for a prototype. Based on the image, the Cybertruck body in white appears to consist of several stamped parts (notably the side stampings) and front and rear megacastings. The rear one is huge, so it might not be a single-piece megacasting but several cast parts bonded together.

The Cybertruck skeleton looked production-ready, and this was confirmed on Friday as more photos from the Cybertruck production line were shared on Twitter. This time, the body in white was placed on a dolly cart, while in the background, you can see more Cybertrucks on the production line. This proves that the pilot production is already underway, and Tesla is advancing fast toward the release-candidate production. It's also obvious that the Cybertruck has moved permanently from the pilot line in Fremont to its rightful home in Austin.

The two images are exciting not only for what they tell us about the production line but also about the Cybertruck itself. In front, it's unclear whether the firewall is stamped or is part of the front megacasting. In the rear, a similar structure is visible, ruling out the possibility of having a midgate to access the vault. The Cybertruck will have a rear windshield, which might be retractable based on the narrow gap between the metal panels. The body in the pictures also has the front hood hinges attached.

The images confirm what we've already known about the Cybertruck, which appears to be designed like a bigger Model Y from the structural point of view. It has stamped side panels, front and rear megacastings, and a structural battery pack, as the Cybertruck's body in the pictures doesn't have a floor. This means Musk's exoskeleton claims (last time made during the Annual Shareholder Meeting on May 16) were inaccurate.

"We had to invent a whole new set of manufacturing techniques in order to build an exoskeleton-based car instead of an endoskeleton-based car," Musk said during the event. Still, the structures on the production line look more like the latter. Moreover, they seem to fuel disappointment among truck fans, who consider the structural battery pack a weak point for a work truck. Without proper reinforcements, the battery would be the only thing keeping the truck sections together when towing. This means that towing capacity will be limited.
