Suzuki has finally decided to take matters into its own hands and develop its own all-new diesel engine that will be available for a wide range of vehicles. This represents Suzuki’s first attempt to manufacture a diesel engine in this class all by itself as until now the company has been relying on Fiat.
The brand’s first small turbo diesel engine will be an 800cc, two-cylinder and will power numerous vehicles starting from small pick-up truck, followed by hatchbacks, saloons and even a compact SUV, but all very small, potentially JDM kei cars or PHEVs with range extenders. Although there will be a lot of cars that will incorporate the brand new engine, we’ll be paying more attention to the Y9T pick-up for the moment.

It seems that the company knows the risks involved when it comes to developing a diesel engine and because of this, they have decided to test their first one in a commercial vehicle. Thus comes the the Y9T and its expected release in 2015.

In case things turn out right, Suzuki will refine it and move on to power a range of hatchbacks. Afterwards, the next big step is to develop the 1.5-liter diesel that is supposed to power a designed-for-India compact SUV called the YBA and built by Maruti Suzuki.

This particular engine will actually be the result of two 800cc, two diesel-cylinder diesels being combined. Yes, we know that logically, by combining two 800cc it would result in a 1.6-liter four-cylinder motor. The thing is that they had to take advantage of the tax benefits that can be obtained if they would downsize it to below 1.5 litres in India.

The YBA SUV that will first test the diesel engine is to be released in 2016 and, if the engine proves itself it might lead to power saloons and hatchbacks as well.
