It has been confirmed ever since before Christmas that the newest hot sedan from Subaru, the STI S209, will be unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. A heavily camouflaged STI was even shown in a very short clip, revealing what the car can do on the track.
As the opening date for the show in Detroit approaches, Subaru went ahead and released the first official image of the car this week, camo-off, showing the model’s front grille, with the company’s logo at the center and the S209 name to the left, red and white.

With the image came virtually zero official details about the new STI. We do know however things moved very quickly when it comes to this car.

On December 15 it was revealed the Japanese filed a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the S209 nameplate, marking the first time since the introduction of the S line in Japan when such a model is given the green light for the American market.

The S209 is, as with all its predecessors, the result of the work conducted by Subaru’s high-performance and motorsport division, Subaru Tecnica International. In this division’s lineup, S is the top of the line, so we are to expect great things from the S209.

All the S cars from STI are manufactured in limited production runs, usually no more than a few hundred, so probably that’s what will happen with this high-performance sedan as well.

To be based on the U.S.-spec Impreza WRX STI, the S209 will therefore be some type of limited edition for the range, one that ends the current generation of the model and sets the stage for the next one that will probably come to term in 2020.

Keep an eye out for more details on the WRX STI S209 as the official release date approaches.
