Subaru Breaks Sales Record in the US in 2009

While most manufacturers felt the full blow of the economic downturn, at least one of them has gained rather than lost in the year that passed. The Japanese from Subaru announced today the company managed to break all records in 2009, as they sold 216,652 units, an increase of 15 percent over 2008 and some 16,000 units above the previous 200,703 units record set in 2006.
"We really owe this tremendous success to both our retailers and employees, who executed the business plans we set in place," Thomas J. Doll, EVP and COO of Subaru of America said. "Along with our vision and their belief in the Subaru brand, they helped make that vision a reality."

In December alone, Subaru managed to find new owners for 23,074 of its vehicles, an increase of 33 percent over the 17,287 units sold in December 2008.

"December represented another record month for Subaru, capping off the best year in the history of the company, in both sales and market share," Tim Colbeck, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America added. "I also believe Subaru is well-positioned to continue its success into 2010. We have the right products, marketing and dealer network providing us with a strong foundation for future growth."

Model by model, the best performer for the last month of 2009 in the manufacturer's lineup was the Outback, which sold 8,376 units in December (55,356 units in 2009), while the biggest gain was achieved by the Legacy, whose sales increased by 37 percent, to 3,620 units in December.

At the opposite end, the Impreza dropped 13 percent in the last month of the year, to 3,647 units and the Tribeca, which sold only 208 units (70 percent decrease).
