If our ideal one-car garage had a single contender in it, the great Audi RS 6 Avant, its place might soon be taken by the brand-new BMW M5 Touring. The five-door version was recently confirmed for production and is due next year alongside the M5 Sedan.
Unlike the smaller M3 Touring, which is a first-ever product for the M Division, the M5 Touring idea is not unheard of. BMW had it for two generations, first in the 1990s and then in the 2000s, and it's now making a comeback for the next generation.

The V8 firepower isn't going anywhere, as it will use an electrified eight-banger, unlike the Mercedes-AMG E 63, which is expected with a six-pot mill. Chances are it might be the same powertrain as the one used on the XM Label Red, where it produces 738 hp (749 ps/550 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque combined. Certain voices speak of roughly 800 horsepower, which could be metric, so one thing's certain: the new M5 will be far punchier than the 617 hp (626 ps/460 kW) existing one.

Fans of the Munich-based marque are wondering whether the upcoming M5 Touring will apply for a US visa, and the answer is that we still don't know. We wouldn't be surprised to learn they will keep it away from our shores, but launching it over here would take away Audi Sport's leverage with the RS 6 Avant. The Ingolstadt company's model has a 621 hp (630 ps/463 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, does the 0 to 60 mph (0-97 kph) in 3.3 seconds, tops out at 155 mph (250 kph), and starts at $125,800 excluding destination.

While the next BMW M5 Touring is still a mysterious car, just like its four-door sibling, the wraps have already fallen unofficially a few times. And by unofficially, we mean via photo editing. Released by our friends at Kolesa, these renderings appear to have been based on the normal 5er in the latest generation, hence the realistic approach. The car has new front and rear bumpers, swollen fenders, a different grille, and exclusive wheels spinning around the red calipers that are part of the uprated brakes. Chassis upgrades are also included, as it sits a bit closer to the road, and out back, it has a multi-fin diffuser, a roof-mounted spoiler, and the signature quad exhaust pipes.

Even if red wouldn't normally be the first color of choice for the M5 Touring, this one wears it elegantly. The shade is joined by blacked-out trim at both ends and on the sides in the form of the window surrounds. The concave alloys sport the same finish, and we think it's a looker overall. Are you hyped about the car world getting a brand-new performance wagon?
