The title is going to sound like we’re talking in code to the uninitiated, but Renault fans know it means only one thing - the French carmaker has fallen out of love with naturally aspirated engines.
The rumors that Renault was working on a worm hatch version of the Clio IV have proven to be true, and for the first time we can show you spyshots of the very car in question. Rumors suggest this is to be called the Gordini, one of the models taking part in the sporty brand’s revival.
The name might not yet be clear, but the technology and the idea behind the car is. The previous Clio came with a version called the GT, what we call a warm hatch. It was powered by the same 1.6-liter 133 hp engine as the Twingo RS and came with a manual gearbox. But the car proved unpopular and was renamed the Clio Gordini (also came with 1.5 dCi), livered in the typical blue.
The main problem with the Twingo RS 133’s engine was that it wasn’t powerful, but it was thirsty. This issue will be fixed by by Renaultsport with a tuned version of the 1.2 TCe 16v turbo engine, which will be pushed to produce 140 hp. There’s also a change that this will be matched to the new six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
Unlike the Clio RS, this will not have flared wheelarches, but it will come with sportier looking bumpers and twin exhaust on the left side of the car. The wheels of the car in these spyshots have their centers covered with tape, indicating there is color there. Gordini blue anyone?
