Subaru has gotten us all excited with outrageous concepts, only to bring "vanilla" cars off the production line. They just did it with Impreza WRX, and they're going to be doing it again next year with the 2015 Legacy sedan and Outback wagon.
Too bad really, because beyond the vanilla taste, Subaru's blend of ingredients is quite tasty. They have better boxer engines than ever, efficient CVT gearboxes and good-all round practicality.
The Legacy sedan has already been previewed at the Los Angeles Auto Show about a week ago. But the model under the camouflage looks nothing like the concept. The production car is more like 2005 instead of 2015. The same goes for the Outback, which was previewed as the Levorg in Tokyo at the same time.
Together with its sister model, the Outback, this Legacy prototype was spotted in Europe. That's because both these mid-size vehicles will have Euro-specific engines. Currently, both are offered with 2-liter petrol and diesel engines, but Subaru could switch to a smaller 1.6 turbo soon. For the US, a turbo engine replacement is also possible, 2.5 GT models likely getting the 2-liter turbo used by the 2014 Forester.
Our say: Ford Taurus grille?
