I feel like you could separate most camper van builds into two categories: practicality-focused and design/aesthetics-focused. Some people want to maximize comfort in a mobile home, while others are all about waking up to a beautiful design, even if that means sacrificing features that make life more enjoyable on the road. Once in a while, I run into rigs that are both practical and stunningly looking – one example is this luxurious Sprinter van.
It's quite challenging to nail such a project if it's your first time building a camper van. I've noticed that most of these recent distinctive projects I've found were created by people with several projects in their portfolios.

What we have here today is a one-off 2WD 2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter made by Jennie and James, a van-building couple in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Learning from all of their past build and from all the feedback they got, they came up with a clean and ultra-functional design for this unit.

The couple has created a calming atmosphere inside using the Japandi style. Japandi is a combination of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. The use of plants, natural light, and organic materials characterizes it.

In this case, you'll notice grey/green wooden cabinetry with earthy brown tones and champagne bronze accents paired with sandy-tone vinyl floors and textured white walls that look like natural stone. Other decorative items, such as small plants and vases, complete the look.

A significant part of the interior is occupied by the full queen-size bed, 80 inches (203 centimeters) long and 60 inches (152 centimeters) wide. The duo managed to fit it by installing Backland extension pods to the camper, thus making it wider. Another brilliant detail is a hidden nook on the side of the bed, featuring two small shelves, switches for the reading light, and a USB port.

One of the signature pieces inside this camper van is the custom upper cabinetry spanning the whole van, featuring fluted wood accents and RV latches. The same fluted accents can be found in the back of the pods and throughout the rest of the vehicle.

You'll discover LED lights integrated into the ceiling, so you'll have plenty of light during nighttime. But if you want to set the mood right, you'd better use the dimmable LED strips, subtly integrated throughout the interior.

Next up, we have the kitchen – it features a solid bamboo countertop, a beautiful granite circular sink, and a bunch of storage space in the form of greenish-grey cabinetry, pantry included. Right next to the sink, you'll discover a spacious wardrobe with a large arched mirror mounted on the inner part of the door.

Here's something you don't often find in camper van kitchens. Jennie and James installed a double drawer – slide it out to reveal a bamboo insert perfect for cutlery and utensils. Pull it further, and you'll find the two-burner induction cooktop. Underneath this drawer, a cabinet houses a 3.3 cubic foot (93-liter) fridge.

Opposite the sink, the couple devised a double bench with a custom vinyl cushion sewn by Jenny. They also fitted a lagoon swivel table with a bamboo tabletop nearby for when they need to eat or work. It can even be extended to make room for two people.

Just like in other camper builds, part of the space underneath the bench is used for storage. The rest is occupied by a Compo Closet portable composting toilet. Right next to the bench, you'll discover a neat little end table, complete with three shelves for shoe storage.

Moving to the driver's cabin, Jennie and James installed a swivel seat and a massive headliner shelf. What's more, this Sprinter came with a few useful factory upgrades, such as an extra cup holder and built-in overhead storage.

If you're familiar with camper van interior designs, you probably think the black thing integrated under the bed is the door to the garage; at least I did. However, that is, in fact, a Tetraband folding shower system. It's pretty compact and easy to set up. Simply twist the knob and fold it down, and you get a tiny shower pan that drains into a 20.5-gallon (78-liter) grey water tank.

Then, you have to attach a shower curtain to the ceiling. A two-gallon 12 V water heater connected to a water pump provides hot water. You'll barely have any space to move inside the shower, but it gets the job done.

Lastly, we have the garage all the way to the van's rear. I was surprised to see how large it was, with plenty of room to bit bulkier items. On the left side, Jennie and James fitted the plumbing system, featuring a 29-gallon (110-liter) freshwater tank and the water heater.

On the opposite side, you'll find the electrical system, comprised of 412 Ah batteries connected to 350 W solar panels on the roof, a 2,000 W inverter, and other Victron components.

This 2020 Sprinter camper van currently has around 23,000 miles (37,014 km), and it's for sale for a whopping $130,000 (€122,623). This price tag makes it inaccessible for most adventurers, but it's indeed a practical van with a distinctive design. Is it worth the cost? That's up to you to decide.
