As the echoes of the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show get harder and harder to hear, car lovers are shifting their attention elsewhere, on the lookout for that special something to make them tick. Those looking for such things in Nice found this: the Vision Mercedes Simplex.
The Simplex is a name that has been around since the beginning of the 20th century, as a car model spawned from the Mercedes 35 hp to provide the maximum of comfort through simplicity.

Adding the Vision moniker to Simplex created this concept car, shown this past weekend at the Design Essentials event in Nice. Well, it's not actually a concept car, but more of a sculpture, as Mercedes-Benz calls it, meant to blend the ancient past with the distant future.

The Vision Mercedes Simplex is a nod to the first apparition of the Mercedes 35 hp in the Race Week in Nice in 1901. It is this car Mercedes – and others – consider to be the first true departure from the carriage-based vehicles of the time, and a template of modern-day vehicles.

The concept, built by the Mercedes-Benz International Design Center Europe in Nice, is at the same time a look at the future, through the use of things like a lens-shaped 3D display for a radiator grille and interior switches inspired by motorcycles and nautical design.

"Only a brand that is as strong as Mercedes-Benz is capable of the physical symbiosis of history and future. The "Vision Mercedes Simplex" symbolizes the transformation of the brand-specific luxury of Mercedes-Benz," said in a statement the carmaker's chief design officer, Gorden Wagener.

Sadly, the Vision Mercedes Simplex is not even a concept, but a sculpture, so there’s no chance we’ll ever get to see it on the road.

But maybe if we give it enough of a warm welcome, perhaps Mercedes will show it at other design and auto shows as well.
