German carmaker Mercedes-Benz is about to open a new chapter in its book on electric vehicles next week, as the much-anticipated reveal of the EQS luxury concept is scheduled for the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
A few days before the start of the event Mercedes released a bunch of unrevealing teaser images of the car, showing just a glimpse of what is the forefather of the future flagship electric car.

The family of EQ cars was born in 2016 in Paris, where the Generation EQ concept was first shown. Since then, the EQ name has grown significantly in importance for the Germans.

The first car in the family is the EQC, a crossover SUV that entered production in May 2019 and will be on the roads by the ends of the year. The second is the EQV MPV.

For the SUV, Mercedes uses an electric powertrain comprised of a battery with a range of up to 471 km (292 miles) and two electric motors, mounted on each of the two axles, that develop 408 hp and 760 Nm of torque.

There’s no telling what the EQS will use, and we’ll have to wait for the concept to be revealed to get an idea on that. Rumors are that a powertrain based on the one of the EQC might make its way into the full-size luxury EV.

Following the presentation of the EQS next week, Mercedes-Benz will get down to business in designing more EVs. The EQ family is expected to grow to a total of ten new models by the end of 2022, ranging in size from the tiny smart – which will drop the use of internal combustion engines starting 2020 – to large SUVs.

By that time, taking into account plug-in hybrids and the introduction of 48-volt systems, the carmaker will have around 130 electrified vehicles in its portfolio.
