Rivian Releases Massive OTA Software Update, R1S Now Considerably Improved

But now, there's a comprehensive update prepared to be delivered to R1S owners. Here's everything that's coming soon with the 2023.34.0 version of the operating software.

For starters, the Irvine-based auto manufacturer enhanced the R1S' advanced driver-assistance systems. Drivers will notice that when the adaptive cruise control or Highway Assist is on, the speed limit will adjust automatically depending on what the traffic signs show. That's becoming the default function. Still, if you want to go faster while having one of these two ADAS on, you'll be able to set the desired speed by pushing the drive stalk down for 0.5 seconds.

Next, Rivian listened to what existing R1S owners had to say and tweaked the suspension system. After the update is installed, All-Purpose Mode combined with the Soft Ride suspension setting will provide an improved ride quality that won't allow rough road surfaces to reflect inside the cabin. The automaker also changed the handling for the Sport Mode to create a balance between comfort and sharpness.

Talking to someone on the phone and to someone else in the car gets simpler. The button on the left side of the steering wheel can mute the microphone, swap between two active calls, or put someone you're talking to on hold to answer another person. Three-way conversations will also be possible.

Moreover, if you save addresses for some of your contacts, you can use the infotainment screen to tap on the navigation details, and the system will return a route to that person's place.

After acquiring A Better Route Planner (ABRP), Rivian updated its dedicated phone app. Now, customers can plan a trip and select a drive mode. Based on the selected mode, the system will calculate when you'll most likely be required to recharge the energy storage unit.

The new software version introduces the screen clean feature. It's in the Service submenu and is very cleverly named "Screen Clean." Activate it by pressing the button and start removing all those annoying fingerprints. Press the "Done" button for three seconds to reenable the touchscreens. If you don't, it'll automatically bring back the touch-sensitive capability after five minutes.

Rivian also worked to minimize further the phantom drain effect when the R1S is parked, and Gear Guard isn't active while the vehicle's at home or is completely disabled.

The OTA update will also introduce some other minor fixes, like showing the option to call or chat with Rivian service when a 12V battery issue is detected. Moreover, new notifications will be shown when charging stops unexpectedly or is temporarily interrupted, and third-row vents will now stop when there's nobody there.

Album information will now also be adequately displayed on the driver's screen.

To get 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, skid plates, and a compact spare tire, customers must spend $3,600 more and add the All-Terrain Upgrade pack.
