Rivian Publishes EPA-Estimated Range of Dual-Motor R1T Truck With "Max Pack" Battery

Rivian started making power units at its Normal factory this year. These motors help the EV maker cut production costs by about 25% per each R1T and R1S that leaves the plant. They are known as "Enduro" motors and the best thing about them is that Rivian won't struggle with parts. It has established a strong supply chain. Two companies provide the young automaker with the power chips needed for their production.

The quad-motor R1Ts and R1S SUVs come with Bosch power units.

But Rivian also promised to give its customers three battery versions – the standard, the large, and the max. Currently, the only one being delivered is the middle option, which is believed to have a capacity of 135 kWh. The standard variant is supposed to come as a 105-kWh unit, while the largest energy storage unit should store around 180 kWh of energy.

The initial estimates said the dual-motor R1T with the "Max Pack" would boast a range of 400 miles. But the EV maker now says the EPA-estimated figure is 410 miles. Having some extra-going capacity is always welcomed, so that's a jolly improvement in our book.

The pickup truck with two Enduro motors and Rivian's largest energy storage unit achieves that range when riding on 21-inch wheels. Going with the 22-inch wheels drops the range to 380 miles, while the 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires bring it down to 355 miles.

That last figure tells us that a dual-motor R1T with the "Max Pack" wearing 20-inch rims with all-terrain tires wrapped around them offers just a three-mile improvement over the same vehicle with the "Large Pack" and 21-inch tires.

When the middle battery option gets paired with the two motors and 20-inch all-terrain tires, the range drops to 307 miles. Thus, choosing the right wheels for your Rivian pickup truck will be extra important. Make sure to check all the facts and figures before signing the buyer's agreement.

Still pretty efficient!

If the battery size remains at the projected 180 kWh, then the R1T would have an efficiency of 2.28 miles per kWh. That would amount to a drop of 0.06 miles per kWh over the same vehicle equipped with the Large Pack. It makes sense to have a slightly lower efficiency since the "Max Pack" means a heavier energy storage unit.

Here are the starting prices you'll have to deal with if you decide to add whatever version of this dual-motor all-wheel-drive vehicle boasting the "Max Pack" to your garage:

• R1T Performance with 21-inch wheels - $94,000;
• R1T with 22-inch wheels – $91,500;
• R1T Performance with 22-inch wheels - $96,500;
• R1T with 22-inch Sport Dark wheels - $92,500;
• R1T Performance with 22-inch Sport Dark wheels - $97,500;
• R1T with 20-inch rims and all-terrain tires – $92,850;
• R1T Performance with 20-inch rims and all-terrain tires - $97,850;
• R1T with 20-inch dark rims and all-terrain tires - $93,850;
• R1T Performance with 20-inch dark rims and all-terrain tires - $98,850.

The "Performance" tag indicates the software unlock of 132 hp in exchange for $5,000. The base dual-motor powertrain puts out 533 hp.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently confirmed the range figures for the dual-motor R1T and R1S with the "Large Pack." When writing, it has not updated the data sheet for the pickup truck with the largest battery option.

Rivian is releasing this great news about the range of its dual-motor R1T with the "Max Pack" at the right time. The brand said earlier this year that its largest battery option would start reaching customers this fall. Now that we have some manufacturer-provided range figures, maybe it will happen.

Don't forget that real-world range greatly depends, among others, on your driving style, the weather, the A/C use, and battery degradation level.

Finally, the marque says that updated figures for the R1S with the "Max Pack" will come soon.
