The minivan segment is slowly but steadily shrinking, with most automakers leaving it behind to concentrate on crossovers and SUVs. We're probably a few years away from seeing the complete death of this body style, and it will be a sad day for the automotive world when that happens.
Don't get us wrong, we were never fans of the people carrier, but in the wake of the crossover boom, it is becoming slightly more appealing, and a modern take on something like the Volkswagen Sharan may not be a smart move from a financial standpoint, but it would probably sell in enough numbers to justify it.

Why mention this model in particular? Because it was brought back to life with a CGI twist, sending ID.7 vibes. Sugardesign_1 on Instagram stands behind these renderings that imagine what a new Sharan may look like if it was revived and built on the same platform as the electric passenger car mentioned above, sporting similar styling.

Closely related to the smaller ID.3 and the ID.4 crossover, Volkswagen's ID.7 is based on the Group's MEB platform that supports multiple powertrain configurations. Therefore, a hypothetical new Sharan would feature several assemblies and would also support a hot variant with previous-gen supercar-like output and all-wheel drive.

But as appealing as a modern Sharan may sound to certain people, they will have to erase this thought from their mind, as chances are it will never happen. The final copy left production for good last year, rolling off the line at the Palmela factory in Portugal. It was based on the old A6 platform, just like the B7 generation Passat, first-gen Tiguan, and its Mediterranean cousin from SEAT, the Alhambra.

The powertrain family consisted of the usual gasoline and diesel engines, which were available with manual and automatic transmissions. Sporting a larger overall footprint compared to the original and being lighter, the second and final generation Sharan survived for twelve long years, with a mid-cycle refresh received in 2015 that premiered at the Geneva Motor Show.

Now, Volkswagen may not be interested in bringing back this moniker to use on a large ICE-powered minivan anymore, but its spirit (kind of) lives on in the Viloran that's being sold in China. This minivan uses the MQB A2 architecture of the Atlas/Teramont, and it is offered with gasoline power and a seven-speed DSG, delivering the thrust to the front axle.

In Europe and North America, its indirect replacement is the ID. Buzz. A modern revival of the iconic Bus, the battery-electric people carrier uses the MEB construction. It is bound to arrive at dealers in the United States in 2024, with the full details and pricing to be announced in due course.
