Five Stars Rating from Euro NCAP for VW Sharan, Passat

Two of the latest models released by Europe's largest manufacturer, the new Sharan and the new Passat, have been awarded five-star ratings by the European safety watchdog, the Euro NCAP.

The two models have been subjected to the organization's regular crash tests, at the end of which it was found that they both meet the criteria needed to get the top rating. The Sharan achieved a 96 percent rating, “one of the highest ever results in what are Euro NCAP’s most stringent tests to date,” while the Passat managed to get a similar score.

The achievement was possible because both of the models come equipped with optimized body-shell rigidity and highly effective airbag and driver assistance systems including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist) and ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program).

The Sharan brings a whole range of occupants safety systems, which include no less than nine airbags: a curtain airbag system for all three rows of seats, side airbags for the first two rows of seats and driver and passenger airbags as well as an additional airbag to protect the driver’s knees.

The more high-end Passat comes equipped with automatic fatigue detection system and city emergency braking function.

Alongside the two models that have achieved the top rating, the Amarok pick-up was also tested, but managed to score only a four-star rating. VW's first pickup comes equipped with DL (Electronic Differential Lock), ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), ESP with Hill Hold Assist, Hill Descent Assist and off-road ABS.
