While an all-new, first-ever Alfa Romeo model was already a big deal, the company's first all-electric nameplate got an unexpected boost in 'popularity' after a moniker controversy caused by the Italian government.
Not long ago, Alfa Romeo felt a bit out of time and a pale shadow of its former self with just two rather old models in its lineup – the Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover SUV. Nowadays, those two have gone through a significant refresh procedure and were joined by the Tonale compact crossover SUV – Alfa's first hybrid model, the 33 Stradale high-performance limited-edition flagship, and the smallest product in the current family, a subcompact crossover SUV.

Interestingly, the controversy surrounding its fresh styling – which doesn't take DNA from the Giulia, Stelvio, Tonale, or 33 Stradale but rather carves its own path – was relegated to background chatter along with the powertrain details that make it a sibling of the Fiat 600e, Abarth 600e, DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, Peugeot 2008, Opel Mokka, Lancia Ypsilon, or Jeep Avenger. Yes, even the 237-hp Elettrica Veloce became mere chatter.

Instead, the focus moved to Alfa Romeo's €29,900 (almost $32k) starting price – which is rather high, granted but would have allegedly been even higher by around €10k ($10,679 at the current exchange rate) if Stellantis produced the new model in Italy instead of Poland alongside the Jeep Avenger, for example. However, the Italian officials decided that using the name Milano corroborated with this manufacturing decision was a big 'no-no' and ultimately forced their hand to change locations or the model's name.

Obviously, Alfa Romeo decided the cheapest thing to do was to rename the new model from Milano to Junior and then also (begrudgingly) thank the Italian government for the free (albeit negative) publicity. Well, it's important to know the story of the Alfa Romeo Junior (formerly Milano) because it might act as the design beacon for the next generation of models – at least across the imaginative realm of digital car content creators.

More precisely, this virtual artist, better known as Theottle on social media, has recently resorted to CGI slicing and dicing the older Maserati Grecale compact luxury crossover SUV and the newborn Alfa Romeo Junior to make an all-new Stelvio – at least digitally. So, in his latest behind-the-scenes making-of video, the pixel master shows us the morphing process of reskinning the Grecale with Junior DNA to come up with the second-gen Stelvio.

The decision is logical – Alfa Romeo has already announced it will launch the next Stelvio iteration during the second half of 2025, and it's only natural to think that it will take after the styling of the latest product, not older ones like the Tonale. So, do you think the largest Alfa crossover SUV will look like this unofficial design project or not?
