French carmaker Renault has finally taken the wraps off its most extreme hot hatch ever, the 275 horsepower Megane RS 275 Trophy. It's a radical track tool aimed squarely at taking down the SEAT Leon Cupra from the leader board of Nurburgring lap times. Unfortunately, we don't yet know if they've succeeded in beating the Spanish car, but a slew of cool performance parts will keep hot hatch fans drooling until June 16th, when all will be revealed.
The 275 Trophy is going to be a strictly regulated limited edition, going on sale next month for the price of €38,000 (in France). That will get you a Golf R, but the Megane is different because it's designed for track use.
10 extra horsepower has been added to the output of the 2-liter engine which now delivers 275 hp at 5,500rpm. Maximum torque of 360 Nm comes in from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm. Both these numbers are almost identical to those of its rival from SEAT and have been achieved thanks to a new exhaust system built by Akrapovic.
The standard setup of the car is that of an RS 265 Cup. However, Renault also offers optional adjustable Ohlins Road & Track dampers with steel springs. They make a world of difference on the circuit, as do the semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that have been developed specifically for extreme front-wheel drive cars.
The Megane RS has just been cosmetically refreshed at the beginning of the year, so it's a nice looking car. This new Trophy pack delivers even more boy racer goods in the form of a carbon fiber exhaust tip and some funky stripes on the side. Inside, the 275 has eather and Alcantara Recaro bucket seats with visible red stitching, as well as an Alcantara steering wheel that's sure to be a talking point.
"Oh look, my steering wheel looks just like on a Lamborghini," says every Megane 275 Trophy owner.
