You’ve got to hand it to Peterbilt for what they’ve done with the 389-series model. The fact that they’re still producing these retro-looking semi-trucks is virtually astounding, especially when everyone else is looking to build haulers that look a great deal more modern and aerodynamic.
Even Peterbilt themselves have plenty of aero-focused semis, such as the 589, which is also available in EV specification. Yet, they’ll still sell you the 389, which looks nearly identical to the 379. Oh, and now they even have the 589, which features the same long nose hood and chassis as the 389, but with a different cab and sleeper section.

I think it’s great that in a world where everyone will soon scramble to build a Tesla Semi rival, manufacturers such as Peterbilt are still selling trucks that look 99% how they did back in the mid-80s. To be fair, Kenworth are doing the same with the W900L series, so props to them. And Mack too, to some extent with the so-called Pinnacle. However, Freightliner on the other hand is exclusively selling modern-looking semis.

Now, what we have here is yet another beautiful Peterbilt 389, this time a 2021 example with (hope you’re sitting down) 542,836 miles (873,600 km) on the clock. That won’t deter anyone from buying it, though, because these trucks are meant to be on the move at all times. As for the asking price, that’ll be $106,950, thank you very much.

According to the ad, this bright red semi comes with a 78-inch-long Sleeper section, a 280-inch wheelbase, Low Air Leaf suspension, chrome accents, dual fuel tanks, leather seats for the interior, sat-nav, and even a refrigerator.

As for the engine, it’s not a Cummins X15, no sir. This particular 389 is rocking the Paccar MX-13 inline-six turbodiesel, which is a 12.9-liter engine available with anywhere from 405 to 510 horsepower, and up to 1,850 lb-ft of torque. We’re not sure what the exact numbers are here, but everything gets sent to the road via an 18-speed manual gearbox.

When it comes to Cummins vs Paccar, there are good arguments to be made on both sides. The Cummins X15 some would say idles better and is generally more powerful. Meanwhile, the Paccar MX-13 is known for its fuel efficiency, and it also happens to weigh less than the X15, which is an advantage in and of itself.

Regardless, if you’re in the market for a used Peterbilt 389 and don’t mind having one in such a vibrant color as bright red, this 2021 model could easily fit the bill, especially when you consider the asking price. It’s not dirt cheap, but it’s not unreasonable either. Oh, and if you happen to be a Kansas City Chiefs fan, well, the decision becomes sort of a no-brainer.
