Technically, whenever you hear about a semi-truck with a Day Cab configuration, it means that it doesn’t feature a sleeper cabin. They’re also usually more fuel-efficient and more maneuverable through traffic, compared to Sleeper Cab models.
Of course, you can also customize your Day Cab semi to feature a custom sleeper configuration, but doing so (especially if it means buying a brand-new truck) will almost certainly not be cheap. Case in point, this 2023 Peterbilt 389 Day Cab (now a Custom Sleeper), up for grabs for the grand total of $409,900, which is pretty much what you’d pay today for a new Ferrari Purosangue.

So, what’ll it be? A new Ferrari SUV or a kick-ass Peterbilt semi that you can live out of? You can also come close to buying a Rolls-Royce Spectre for that money, which would certainly make for a more comfortable experience compared to the Purosangue, but it’ll still be nowhere near as comfortable as a home on wheels.

The 389 is Peterbilt’s successor to the massively popular 379 model, replacing the latter back in 2007. You can easily tell them apart by the upgraded headlights (oval clusters) and longer hood. The 389 actually has the longest-ever hood fitted to a conventional Peterbilt semi. Just a fun fact for you.

Now that we’ve got that settled, let’s take a closer look at this black 2023 Peterbilt 389. As previously stated, it packs a custom sleeper configuration at the rear, despite the Day Cab Tractor setup. It also comes with loads of chrome accents, dual 26” fuel tanks (150 gallons each), low air leaf suspension, plus a massive 356-inch (9 meter long) wheelbase. This is even bigger than that custom 379 with the camper conversion we showed you last week.

Moving on to the interior, you’ve got your leather driver and passenger seats, sat-nav, air conditioning, and a digital driver’s display, among loads of other modern-day amenities.

What’s particularly interesting is what’s going on in the back. The 168” (4.26 meter) sleeper section features a fully equipped kitchen, toilet and bedroom with dual bunks. You’ve got your sink, microwave, large refrigerator, a lavatory with shower, and even a flat screen TV for watching your favorite movies – probably ‘Over the Top’ and ‘Duel’, am I right?

Anyway, you can easily live in this Peterbilt full-time, and all things considered, it’s a lot nicer than that custom 379 I just mentioned earlier. Then again, that one only cost $62,500.

As for what this brand-new semi can do in terms of performance, well, we know it’s packing a Cummins X15 turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine, and a new one at that. But what we don’t know is whether this is the X15 Productivity Series, Efficiency Series or the X15 Performance Series. Regardless, it’s probably putting down more than 500 horsepower and 1,650 lb-ft (2,237 Nm) of torque through a capable 18-speed transmission.
