We all know the story of how a dealer paved the way for the 428 Cobra Jet, but when Ford decided to bring the new engine to the Mustang, it did it with baby steps.
The company produced a limited run of 50 428 Cobra Jet Mustangs, all painted in Wimbledon White and sporting a black vinyl interior. Some of these cars landed in NHRA racing, getting prepped for the track by specialists like Holman-Moody.

Considering Ford produced only 50 examples, finding them is easy, as the VIN code helps us identify whether a 428 Cobra Jet is part of this initial limited run. The first VIN was 8F02R135007, while the last was 8F02R135056. If the VIN tag is placed anywhere between 007 and 056, your 428 Cobra Jet is one of these rare Mustangs.

What's much harder is finding an original and complete example. All these 428 Cobra Jets rolled off the assembly lines with a heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmission and manual drum brakes. Statistics show that 30 examples used seam sealer and sound deadener, and you can tell them apart from the rest of the run by DSO code 844660.

The 1968 Mustang in these photos is the real deal.

Coming with VIN code 8F02R135030, the Mustang is now in perfect shape thanks to meticulous rotisserie restoration. eBay seller shovelhead_1979 says the overhaul included "most original parts," so you'll have to inspect this part if you're particularly interested in a 100% original Mustang.

The vehicle was found with only 8,374 miles (13,476 km), and now that the restoration is complete, the odometer indicates only 8,480 miles (13,647 km). Everything starts, runs, and works correctly, so it won't need anything once it finds a new home.

This 428 Cobra Jet was built with racing in mind, so it's one of the examples that Homan-Moody prepared for the track. It still comes with the traction bars, but the owner says they have "a ton of paperwork, research, history, and original build sheet" to prove to the buyer what this rare car is all about.

You can imagine that everything you've read so far makes a Mustang incredibly expensive, as this isn't the kind of car you see every day. Ford produced only 50 examples, and it's unknown how many are still alive today, so if you want to get your hands on #30, it'll cost more than most people can afford.

The owner is willing to let this rare Mustang go for $215,000, but they also enabled the Make Offer button to leave the door open for some negotiations. eBay's statistics show that 53 people are watching the listing, but few are likely to be involved in a potential purchase, considering the price.
