The 2014 Range Rover Sport is set to receive a four-cylinder engine in the future, said Stuart Frith, Land Rover’s Chief Program Engineer for Range Rover Sport.
"The significant weight reduction... [of] 420kg has allowed us to put an I4 [inline four-cylinder] engine in the car – which will come later in the life cycle of the product. Prototypes that we've made, with the I4 in, the car really still is truly a Range Rover; it still has the performance and off-road capability, because of that weight saving,” Frith revealed.
All told, this entry-level version of the 2014 Range Rover Sport will share same turbocharged 2.0-liter mill fitted in the Range Rover Evoque, but Frith refrained to unveil a release date. Sourced from Ford’s EcoBoost, also used in the Ford Edge, Ford Explorer, Land Rover’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine delivers 240 HP and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) of torque.
Frith also confirmed that the hybrid version of the Range Rover Sport will be introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show scheduled later this year.
