Poor Sales May Force Citroen to Reduce WRC Budget or Withdraw Altogether

Citroen is a force to be reckoned with, in the world of WRC, which they have all-but dominated in the last decade. However, in order to reach these heights of success and glory, the company has had to sink a lot of money into their WRC effort, and with their road car sales on the decline, the French manufacturer will reduce the budget allocated for racing, or, if things still look bad then, withdraw completely from the sport.
The head of the company, Frederic Banze said: “Look where Citroën was a decade ago – almost gone [. . .] The lead force in that transformation has been product, but the World Rally Championship program has contributed a lot too, inspiring the company from within and transforming its image among the outside world [. . .] Competing and winning in these extreme conditions sends a proud message, particularly when it has been achieved in a journey with Sebastien Loeb, who has developed with us into the standard bearer for all drivers.

Another worrying aspect for Citroen is the fact that VW will be entering the WRC world as of next year, and they will arrive with a considerably bigger budget - much more than the French company wants/has to give. Citroen will rely on “experience and knowledge” to triumph over the Germans.
