During this April’s Shanghai Auto Show, Volvo’s spinoff Polestar presented the 2 electric car, the first true competitor for the Tesla Model 3. With the start of production scheduled for the early months of next year, the company announced this week pricing for the model on the European market.
At first, the car will sell in 6 European countries, namely Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. In Germany, it will sell starting from €58,800, which is a tad more than the entry price of the dual-motor long range Model 3.

“We have seen very keen interest in Polestar 2 since revealing it earlier this year. By confirming European pricing, we show the outstanding value this high specification vehicle represents,” said in a statement Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

Polestar hopes the nearly €8,000 gap that separates it from the Tesla will be fully justified by all the extras the car has to offer. The vehicle comes in an “extremely high specification for initial production,” including several comfort and assistance packages, pick-up and delivery, and three-years worth of servicing and maintenance.

Also, the 2 is equipped with an Android Auto operating system that is according to Polestar “a first for any vehicle.”

The Polestar 2 is powered by two electric motors fitted on each of the axles, giving it all-wheel-drive capability. Together, they develop 408 hp and draw their power from a 78 kWh battery pack good for up to 500 km (310 miles) of range under WLTP testing.

For a while, the carmaker will only sell the car via its website, where reservations can already be placed. Polestar does plan to open about 50 locations across the continent for information and test drives by the end of next year.

In the U.S., pricing for the Polestar 2 has not been officially announced, but the company did confirm that the $63,000 target remains a possibility.

First deliveries of the model are expected to begin in June 2020.
