At the time I'm writing this only a few hours separate us from the moment when the Great North American Eclipse starts somewhere on Mexico's Pacific Coast. From there, it will move up the United States and all the way to Canada, covering in total darkness a patch of the nation that stretches from Texas to Maine. What better time, then, to launch a pitch-black version of a favorite truck among Americans?
Enter the 2024 Jeep Gladiator NightHawk, a vehicle specifically born to mark the moment when the Moon turned the Sun off in the middle of the day. And it does so betting on both visual and mechanical enhancements.

The NightHawk is a package for the entry-level Gladiator Sport, and as the name says it bets everything on darkness. Granted, one can have it for any kind of body-color the Gladiator model comes in (and there are seven colors in all to choose from, including the brand-new for this year Anvil), but you have to admit it probably looks best pulled over a black Gladiator.

The visual enhancements the Jeep package brings to the truck come in the form of a body-color hard top, black accents on the bumper, fender flares in the same color as the bodywork, and deep-tinted sunscreen windows.

Topping all these things off are the 20-inch aluminum wheels, painted in gloss black and wrapped in all-terrain tires, and the rock rails.

Behind the wheels, Jeep hid heavy-duty Dana 44 axles at both ends of the vehicle, with a ratio of 3.73:1. The back is also supported by an anti-spin differential axle. No changes have been made to the powertrain, but the package does include an automatic transmission.

The only creature comforts included in the NightHawk are the power heated mirrors, remote keyless entry system, and the power windows and locks.

By itself the NightHawk package is worth $5,295, which brings the price of the Gladiator Sport it is meant for to $43,190. Jeep says the model will come in a very limited run of just 2,000 units for both the American and Canadian markets. The order books for the eclipse-honoring Jeep are already open, so what better time to cut in line than now when everyone is busy with the eclipse?

To make sure no one forgets the moment a solar eclipse cut through the United States and Jeep launched the Nighthawk, the carmaker will display huge ads on weather.com.

Back to the solar eclipse, remember to protect your eyes and don't look at the celestial spectacle with the naked eyes. And no, smartphones and digital filters are not effective in protecting you from what could be a serious and life-altering visual disability. Even NASA says this.
