When Peugeot launched the 208, it said that this supermini would become as successful as the 206 once was. It was designed to be smaller and lighter, ideal for city driving or as a second family car.
But not even this brand new car is safe from the bad European economy. Sources within PSA Peugeot-Citroen have told Autonews magazine that the company will cut both the sales outlook and the production output of the 208.
The Wall Street Journal recently published a story in which it said Peugeot’s factory in Poissy, west of Paris, would make 35 instead of 52 units per hours on one less shift. Some temporary workers will be fired.
Peugeot still expects the 208 to make up 10 of the European supermini market, but the initial sales expectations of 550,000 worldwide and 420,000 now look very optimistic.
The 208 is smaller than the 207, measuring 3,975 mm in length, which is almost the same as the Citroen DS3’s 3,950 mm. The new supermini loses most of the extra proportions mostly in its nose overhang, and about 110kg (250 lbs) of kerb weight. It wheelbase is identical to the 207, yet Peugeot has reportedly made the interior dimensions a bit bigger.
It’s also a lot greener, as it will come with a choice of two three-cylinder engines: a 1.0-liter with 75 hp and a 1.2-liter with 100 hp. The diesel range will see plenty of e-HDi units as well, providing up to 140 hp.
