The Peugeot 208 is one of Groupe PSA’s most popular models in Europe, with the subcompact hatchback selling 247,379 examples in 2016, up from 228,088 the year prior. It’s the fifth most popular model in the segment after the Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta, and Opel Corsa, which is why the French brand plans to up its appeal by bringing forth an EV.
We’ve first heard that Peugeot wants to launch the 208 EV earlier this year through a report from the German motoring media. Up to this point, it’s been believed the e-hatchback will go official at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, with the European market launch scheduled for late 2018 for the 2019 model year.
The 208 EV will come as a result of the subcompact model going CMP. The Common Modular Platform is the backbone of the next-generation model, and it’s a co-development with Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motors. For electric vehicles, the name is e-CMP and Groupe PSA promises up to 450 kilometers (280 miles) of driving range. No less than four models will be underpinned by the e-CMP, the first of which coming in early 2019.
Citing PSA executives, Automotive News further confirms the plan to electrify the 208, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Also in 2019, luxury division DS will introduce the DS 3 Crossback EV, while Peugeot will debut the second electrified model in the form of the 2008 EV in 2020. The publication believes the 208 EV will sport a driving range of just about 300 kilometers (186 miles).
Plug-in hybrid vehicles are also in the offing, with the EMP2 platform serving as the building block. The DS 7 Crossback PHEV reportedly comes in 2019, after which the Peugeot 5008 PHEV and Citroen C5 Aircross PHEV will follow. The Peugeot 3008 and Opel Grandland X will also add plug-in hybrid versions.
On that note, Groupe PSA will electrify 80% of its model lineup by 2023. If you were wondering why the French automaker is betting big of EVs and PHEVs, that's because France will ban sales of ICE vehicles by 2040.
