There are at least 100 people injured and an unconfirmed number of deaths following the derailment of a commuter train in Milan earlier this morning, Italian media reports. At least 10 of the wounded are in serious condition. Following the crash, several other trains have been delayed or even suspended.
The train, operated by state-owned company Ferrovie Dello Stato, crashed in Pioltello, near Milan. The cause of the derailment is not yet known, nor the speed at which the train was traveling. The images from the scene show one of the carriages twisted onto itself.

According to Italian publication La Repubblica, passengers say they felt the train vibrating for some time and with intensity before it left the tracks.

One aerial image of the site shows the two carts of the train still attached to the engine. The third seems to have jumped from the tracks for some reason, ending up parallel with the cart in front of them. Judging by the position of the carts, it would appear the engine was pushing, and not pulling them.

According to officials, the train was full at the time of the accident. “It was commuter hour, the train was full,” Milan’s deputy police chief Chiara Ambrosio was quoted as saying by broadcaster SkyTG24.

More details about this incident and the cause that led to it will be made available as soon as the authorities manage to gather all the information they require.

Italy is not a stranger to train crashes. Since 2016 there have been six such incidents, that caused in all the deaths of 44 people. The most serious such event took place in July 2016, when two trains collided on a single-track section of the Bari–Barletta railway between the towns of Andria and Corato. Twenty-three people died, and 54 others were injured in this crash.
