The brand new Opel Astra OPC will get its official launch party at the Geneva Motor Show. And while GM’s European division might not be doing so well on the market, the new hothach seems almost perfect on paper.
It’s got a highly tuned version GM’s 2.0-liter direct-injection, turbocharged Ecotec engine delivering 280 PS. The standard sprint time has not been revealed yet, but we can tell you that is that it will hit the same electronically limited top speed as any BMW or Mercedes sportscar: 250 km/h or 155 mph. Then again, the old one wasn’t exactly lacking in horsepower, as it had everything beat in that department.
But they’ve paid a bit more attention to the dynamics as well, by fitting the car with s HiPer Strut front suspension, plus a torsion-beam axle with a Watt’s linkage in the rear.
It’s a bit of a stretch right now, but the Astra OPC could be turned into a Buick, as Car and Driver reports it could be marketed as a GS sports car. It definitely wouldn’t hurt, but the OPC is packed with technology that might make it too expensive.
