Set to replace the 1.7-liter oil burner produced at GM Powertrain Poland since the dinosaurs were still around, the 1.6-liter CDTI turbo diesel will provide the Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC with better grunt and greater fuel economy than its Isuzu-designed predecessor.
The new kid on the block also replaces the Opel Meriva minivan’s entry-level turbo diesel - the 1.3-liter CDTI. Available in three levels of power, the least punchy variant is rated at 95 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque, 100 Nm more than the aging 1.3 mill. On the coupe version of the Astra, the all-new 1.6-liter CDTI delivers 136 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque.

Not that long ago, Volkswagen squeezed 130-plus horsepower out of the 1.9-liter R4 TDI engine fitted with Pump Duse, while the current 2.0 TDI delivers 150 horsepower and 320 Nm. Considering its capacity, GM’s 1.6L CDTI is a pretty good piece of kit. Already available for order in Germany, the Opel Astra GTC 1.6 CDTI is priced from €24,390 (£19,554) including VAT. The latest all-aluminium turbo diesel unit comes as standard with a six-speed manual box, Start/Stop and regenerative braking.

Even though it complies with the future Euro 6 emissions standard, the cleanest diesel ever made by General Motors propels the Astra GTC from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a respectable 10.2 seconds, all while consuming just 4.1 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (68.8 U.K. mpg) on the combined cycle. According to the manufacturer, the “new 1.6 CDTI is the quietest diesel in its class, earning the name whisper diesel.”
