The petrol-burning unit is a 1.0-liter with three cylinders and an all-aluminum block. It's been rated at 115 hp (85 kW), making it more powerful than the 90 hp 0.9 TCe from Renault and the 100 hp 1.0 EcoBoost, but slightly less powerful than the 120 hp version of the aforementioned Ford engine.

The power of the 1.0 SIDI Turbo engine also offer 166 Nm from 1,800 to 4,700 rpm. Again, that figure is similar to its three-cylinder turbo rivals.

Just like Volkswagen said the 1.2 TSI was better than a 1.6 FSI, so too does Opel brag about its downsized achievements. The 12-valve (4 per cylinder) engine is supposedly more efficient, lighter and more torque than an older 1.6 lump.

State-of-the-art technologies such as direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and a lightweight aluminium cylinder-block, are key efficiency enablers. Opel expects the new engine family to deliver impressive fuel economy and CO2 emissions significantly lower than 100 g/km.

The Adam will be the first application, but clearly this engine will also go into the new Corsa, possible even some bigger cars. We'll likely get to find out more about their new engine strategy at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Ford's model lineup has shown us that EcoBoost costs more to buy in the first place but it also offers more torque and performance than aspirated engines.

Looking at the current Opel Adam engine range, we've come to the conclusion that the 1.0 SIDI Turbo is a new, more expensive range-topper. Currently, the most powerful unit on offer is a 100 hp 1.4-liter with just 130 horsepower. That car takes 11 seconds to reach 100 km/h, so this new turbo should come close to 10.
