German automaker Opel has announced that its Astra GTC three-dour coupe will become available with the company’s new 1.6 SIDI Turbo engine.
Already fitted on other Opel vehicles, the Spark Ignition Direct Injection unit develops 170 HP (125 kW) and up to 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque when mated to either a standard six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

With the new engine under its bonnet, the Astra GTC will be able to reach a top speed of 219 km/h and a fuel consumption of only 6.1 liters per 100 kilometers with the New European Driving Cycle.

“Through 2016 we are introducing three all-new engine families, 13 new engines and a host of new transmissions. The new-generation 1.6 SIDI Turbo is the start of our large powertrain offensive. So of course this engine has to be offered in our sporty compact coupé,” says Opel management board member for Engineering, Mike Ableson. “With its superb performance the Turbo direct injection gasoline engine perfectly complements the Opel Astra GTC’s character – a muscular look that combines attention-getting design with strong performance and exemplary economy.”

Already available in Germany, the Opel Astra GTC with the 1.6-liter SIDI Turbo engine can be had starting from €23,850.
