A pair of thieves hitting up a jewelry store in Colchester, Essex, didn’t imagine that onlookers would interfere and stop them from getting away with their loot.
So that’s why they left the keys in the ignition of their getaway bike, while they were inside, taking whatever they could get their hands on. The Daily Mail says they stole mostly jewelry, gems and watches, but doesn’t offer an exact amount.
Onlookers noticed some commotion outside the store on the busy, narrow street, and the moment they understood what was happening, they acted. The entire scene was caught on camera by another passer-by, and you can see the video at the bottom of the page.
One woman in particular showed great courage. She ran down the street and took the keys out of the ignition, knowing that the thieves would have to make their way on foot if deprived of a means of escape. Another guy followed her lead and knocked the bike to the ground.
The woman held on to the keys even when one of the two thieves tried to pry them from her hands. Moreover, she chased him down the street when he ran away.
The same media outlet says that one of the robbers was caught by an off-duty policeman who happened to be in the area, and that he’s been charged and is in police custody. Authorities are still on the lookout for his partner in crime.
The woman who caught the incident on camera says it played out like a scene in the movie, where attackers’ plans are thwarted by everyday superheroes. She turned the footage to the police for information but also shared it on social media. She and her boyfriend did not get involved in the brief scuffle or chase after the thieves.
