In April last year, Nissan unveiled something called the Compact Sport Concept at the Shanghai Auto Show. It was basically like a Micra on steroids and was powered by a 190 horsepower 1.6-liter turbo engine, the one in the Juke.
We were very fond of the concept, as we are of any hot hatch in general. But we haven’t heard anything since then.

Today, a new report emerged, saying that Nissan will launch a rival for the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ as early as next year. The car will most likely be launched under the Z line and will have actually be front wheel drive.

The project has just received the green light, according to Motor Trend, who say the Mini-Z will be inspired by the Compact Sport Concept.

It’s still too early to tell what will become of the project. Most likely, it will not be as simple as making a Micra three-door with a big engine. But it’s encouraging to hear that it might have the AWD running gear of the Juke, and that it could get more power thanks to advancements made by the DeltaWing race car, which also uses the turbo 1.6L.
