When Nissan replaces the Altima mid-size sedan, the vehicle will get the company's first, in-house develops, front-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain.
The system will replace the outgoing Toyota-based hybrid front-wheel-drive system and is set o arrive in 2013, as Automotive News (sub. req.) writes.
The system will share components with the one developed by the company for the rear-wheel-drive 2012 Infiniti M35h, which means that we'll get a dual-clutch, single-motor, lithium-ion battery pack layout. However, the M35h's 3.5-liter V6 engine will be replaced by a downsized supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit, which will work with a new, Xtronic continuously variable transmission.
Nissan is currently working to develop the system and hasn't officially confirmed that the Altima will be the one to get it, but this has has the most chances.
