Volkswagen’s new Golf GTI has been leaked, just one day ahead of the scheduled debut at the Paris Motor Show, which was only supposed to take place tomorrow. These first photos leaked onto the internet show the concept version of the MkVII Golf GTI, though the production model that comes next year will be pretty much the same, save the big wheels.
According to German magazine Autobild, the new Golf GTI will have a disappointing 220 PS (217 hp) and 350Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. This will be upgraded to 230 PS if you go for an optional performance package.
The GTI will be available with either a six-speed manual or a DSG. It will be able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.6 seconds and will have a top speed of 246km/h (153mph). The 230 PS version will be slightly faster – 6.5 seconds to 100 km/ and a top speed of 250km/h (155mph).
The photos show only the three-door version of the new Golf GTI, but of course there will be a five-door as well. The concept has mesh grille and the usual red accents line that now cuts through the middle of he headlights.
Inside, you are greeted by the standard tartan upholstery, but it does look a bit sportier thanks to a dashboard that’s angled towards the driver, a flat bottomed leather steering wheel with red stitching and piano black accents.
To sum it all up, the we find the new Golf GTI terribly underwhelming. A quick check of the history books will tell us the Golf V GTI was launched in 2004, came with 200 hp and even 230 as a edition, and also had DSG. The car is lighter and a bit faster (0.6 seconds faster), but they are playing it way too safe!
autoevolution will be attending the Paris Motor Show 2012, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
