As part of the new five-year plan meant to bring the British manufacturer right up Porsche's and Ferrari's alleys, Lotus sent letters this week to its entire European dealership network, letting them know that the current contracts will expire in July 2012.
According to Autocar, the letter was sent because of the contract provision calling for a two years notice for the termination of contracts. The current Lotus dealers will get a chance to apply for a new contract, but probably under different terms and conditions.
There is a shroud of mystery surrounding Lotus ever since it announced a revolution and, at the same time, its evolution. Set to be announced at the Paris Motor Show later this year, Lotus' new direction includes, thus, a reorganization of the whole company.
In terms of cars, people talk about the rebirth of the Esprit (powered by a V8 or even a V10), or possibly a new Elise model. Of course, the possibility of an all-electric Lotus (in our opinion, the most likely-to-be-true rumor) cannot be ignored. After all, we've already seen a preview of such a car, the Evora 414E Hybrid, while the Tesla Roadster is breaking record after record as an electric car built on a Lotus chassis.
"Group Lotus is targeted to have the best car in class products across the key luxury sports car segment with unparalleled brand experience, sales and after-sales service, efficiency and high quality product,” Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, managing director of Lotus' owner Proton said in the end of last month.
"It also targeted to increased product volume to 8,000 units per annum by 2015 from the current 2,000 units per annum."
As saids, it will all be revealed in Paris, where an autoevolution team will be sent to snoop around.
