Tesla Cybertruck's software still lacks features compared to other models, but Tesla is working to correct this. The 2024.8.4 software update brings the Cybertruck closer to its brothers, with features like Auto Wipers, One-Time Charge Limit, and more. The Cybertruck is still missing basic Autopilot, not to mention the self-driving features other Tesla models offer.
Tesla started Cybertruck deliveries last November, although the production truck turned out less impressive than the one announced in 2019. Most notably, people complained about the range not meeting expectations, longer charging times, and some missing features. However, Tesla delivered in the tech department with cutting-edge technologies unique to the Cybertruck. With so many new things that still need polishing, there's no wonder that the Cybertruck's software is still not on par with other Tesla models.
The Cybertruck comes with a steer-by-wire system instead of a mechanical steering system. It also has a 48-volt electrical system, which requires completely new parts that are not available off the shelf. These changes alone mean that the Cybertruck software significantly differs from the one installed on other Tesla vehicles. This requires a separate software team to develop, test, and validate it, making the Cybertruck lag behind feature-wise. But that doesn't mean Tesla isn't working hard to close that gap.
In February, the Cybertruck got its first over-the-air update since the start of deliveries. The 2024.2.3 update significantly improved ride and handling and optimized charging based on the DC fast-charging station's capabilities. Now, a new software update brings the Cybertruck closer to other Tesla models in terms of features. With the 2024.8.4 update, the Tesla Cybertruck gets Auto Wipers, One-Time Charge Limit, and the option to view and reset tire mileage.
Arguably, the most important is Auto Wipers. However, we have yet to see if this works better than other Tesla EVs. Owners have been complaining for a long time because of the poor Auto Wiper implementation. Instead of using a rain sensor, Tesla insisted on using camera input to see when it's raining. This leads to many false positives, triggering a dry wipe when it's sunny. It also has awkward moments when the rain is pouring outside, but the wipers remain dormant. Although there are manual overrides, they usually don't work with Autopilot on.
This is why the owners cheered when Tesla introduced the option to turn off the wipers even when driving on Autopilot. This has yet to be implemented on the Cybertruck. According to the release notes, turning on the Autopilot features automatically sets wipers to Auto. The funniest thing? Tesla Cybertruck doesn't yet have any Autopilot features, as Tesla hasn't finalized the software.
The update brings some Cybertruck-specific features, like the Trailer Alarm and Bluetooth headphones for the rear passengers. The former means the vehicle alarm also monitors whether your trailer is plugged into the hitch. Finally, the update allows pairing up to two sets of Bluetooth headphones for the rear passengers to watch shows or play games on the rear touchscreen. Front passengers can continue to listen to other audio from the front.
