Apparently, Mazda was in no hurry to launch the new MX-5 Cup racing version of its famous roadster, after previewing it all the way back in November last year and falling silent ever since.
Now, though, the car is finally ready and Mazda lost no time announcing it will be one of the pace cars for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. While we’re still to find out the exact upgrades from the base road-going version, it is absolutely clear the new Mazda MX-5 Cup means business just by looking at it.

Unfortunately, that’s all we can do right now, as a detailed spec sheet is still not available. The Mazda MX-5 Cup is set to be used in next year’s Global MX-5 Cup, a mono-brand competition open to those who purchase the car and sign up for the season.

This outing on the famous Californian raceway will be used as an added opportunity to gather more data about the car before its commercial debut, as well as a chance of parading the model in front of a host if influential figures in motorsport.

Alongside the new MX-5 Cup, a series of other Mazda models will also act as pace cars, among which anyone present at the event will be able to spot a Mazda6, an RX-8, an older MX-5 and even a CX-5 SUV.

Speaking about the event, this is what John Doonan, director of motorsports for Mazda North American Operations: “For Mazda, this weekend is the perfect blend of past, present, and future. We are celebrating our motorsports heritage on the track with our vintage race cars. We are showcasing our current line-up of race-inspired products in our consumer display in the paddock, and with this pace car, we are giving a glimpse into the 2016 racing season when the latest MX-5 Miata will be racing in the Global MX-5 Cup.

The 2015 Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca racing season will conclude on September 11-13 with the Mazda Road to Indy, and Pirelli World Challenge finals.
